Control Valves for Water and Wastewater Treatment: Flow, Level and Chemical Dosing
Water and wastewater duty looks easy — low pressure, low temperature, ambient water. The difficulty is different: enormous size ranges, highly variable flow, an aggressive outdoor environment, and a maintenance model where the valve may be visited once a year.

The low-Cv dosing problem
Dosing is where control valves most often fail, because the required Cv is so small that the valve operates in a region where standard trim cannot resolve flow. A 0.5 l/h coagulant dose has a Cv around 0.0005 — far below the controllable range of a conventional DN25 plug. The solutions are a micro-flow trim (a tapered needle in a matched seat, giving Cv from 0.0001 upward), a variable-speed dosing pump instead of a control valve, or a larger valve with a characterised positioner and reduced port. Always state the minimum controllable flow as well as the maximum — a valve specified only at the design dose will not control at start-up or at low turbidity.
Materials for water duty
- Potable water: bodies in ductile iron with fusion-bonded epoxy or 316L; elastomers and coatings must carry drinking-water approval (NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS, KTW).
- Seawater and brine: duplex 2205/2507, Monel, or super-austenitic; never 316 in warm stagnant seawater.
- Chlorine and hypochlorite: PTFE/PVDF-lined or titanium for wet chlorine; note that elastomer selection (EPDM vs Viton) drives seal life.
- Wastewater and sludge: 316 or duplex bodies with hardened coating on the knife or plug; expect abrasion and design for replaceable seats.
- Actuators and accessories: IP67/68 enclosure, and a stainless or marine-grade coating on the yoke and fasteners — corrosion of the actuator, not the valve, is the usual reason a plant valve stops working.
Design details for reliability
- Use a self-operated or pilot-operated level control on remote tanks — no air or power is required and there is nothing to tune.
- Specify a full-bore valve wherever the line is pigged or rodded.
- Add a strainer upstream of every dosing valve; a single particle in a micro-flow trim is a process upset.
- Select the actuator for the dirty torque, not the clean break torque — with a 1.5–2 factor for sludge and a further margin for infrequent operation.
- Provide manual override with a handwheel or gear operator so the plant can keep running during an actuator failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which valve type is best for filter flow control?
An eccentric rotary plug valve or a high-performance butterfly valve is normally used. Both give good throttling behaviour in the 20 to 70 degree or 20 to 80 percent range, tolerate the low pressure drop available, and are far lighter and cheaper than a globe valve at the DN300 to DN600 sizes typical of filter outlets.
Why can my chemical dosing valve not control at low flow?
The required Cv is usually below the controllable limit of a standard trim, so the valve is either nearly closed or passing far too much. The fix is a micro-flow trim with a Cv as low as 0.0001, a characterised positioner, or replacing the valve with a variable-speed dosing pump.
What material is suitable for seawater service?
Duplex 2205 or super-duplex 2507, Monel, or a lined valve are appropriate. Standard 316 stainless suffers pitting and crevice corrosion in warm, stagnant or chlorinated seawater and should be avoided for pressure boundary parts.
How do I choose an actuator enclosure for outdoor water duty?
Specify IP67 as a minimum and IP68 or a submersible design where the valve can be flooded. In addition, require marine-grade or stainless fasteners and a corrosion-protected yoke, because in practice the actuator corrodes before the valve body does.
